Emilico is a Living Doll in the Shadows House, alongside many others who serve the mansion's completely black, soot-emitting residents. Each "Shadow" has a corresponding Doll, and Emilico must keep the house immaculate while also representing her master Kate. Despite their roles, Kate treats Emilico as a friend and confidant. The mysterious nature of the partnership between these two groups is further complicated by the overseers on the upper levels of the mansion, their motives unknown. This has been the norm in their world for as long as they can remember.
Emilico is just one of many "Living Dolls" serving in the Shadows House, residents of which are pitch black from head to toe and constantly leak soot that stains the house black. Each "Shadow" is partnered with a Doll, which strangely resembles the other. As a Living Doll, Emilico must keep the house sparkling clean as well as act as the face for her master, Kate. In turn, Kate supports Emilico and treats her as her confidant. As far as either of them can remember, this has always been the way their world works. Yuji has just started a new semester of high school and everything seems to be normal. That all changes one day when he goes out shopping after school. The entire world around him freezes except for two monsters that begin to devour the frozen people. Upon seeing him move they call him a "Mystes" and try to kill him. Then a mysterious girl with hot eyes and long flaming hair comes to his rescue. She brings back all the people that were devoured and unfreezes the world. According to her she didn't bring them back, but created temporary replacements. She also says that Yuji is an extremely rare form of these replacements, or "Torches" known as a "Mystes" with a treasure inside. Thanks to this, more monsters will come after him, and she will protect him at all costs.

The story ends with a montage of panels showing all the aforementioned characters preparing to travel to Funbari no Onsen, ending with a spread of Anna and Yoh. --- Mappa-Douji - Is a manga created by Japanese mangaka Hiroyuki Takei. It is one chapter long and is the tale of Hao Asakura, a Shaman King character, as a child 1000 years ago. In this original incarnation, his name is Asaha Douji. He was named after his mother, Asano Ha, who was killed by humans for being a yokai who could see and speak with demons. After his mother's death, Asaha is left with no home and no family. He meets and befriends a demon named Ohachiyo who renames him Mappa Douji (Demon Child), to avoid confusion between his and his mother's similar names, as the kanji could be pronounced both ways. Ohachiyo teaches Mappa Douji many things, and towards the end of the story he gives Mappa Douji the demonic power of reading minds, the beginning of Hao's powerfully and dangerously gifted mind. It is not told in this story, but in the main Shaman King manga, Hao later becomes an onmyōji, which is a hint that Hao's fictional life may be based on the Japanese legend of Abe no Seimei, a famous onmyōji whose mother was also rumoured to be a yokai.
